Chapter Eleven

Audrey

I’m closing down the front end with a very hungover Mr. Moody. Eventually, I give up and send him home to sleep it off, because he’s not helping anyway. Reluctantly, he leaves me alone in the front of the brewery after I make multiple promises not to steal anything. Don’t know why I have to do that. One would think if one is hired, one would be trusted. The rest of them trust me, at least.

As soon as I finish putting the last round of pint glasses into the dishwasher, I freeze. Every hair on the back of my neck and arms is raised. Spinning around, I find her standing in front of me, perfect like always. I could seriously curse her for that. In fact… “Why are you always so damn perfect?”

Madeline scrunches up her nose in retaliation, and it’s actually one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen. She presses her palms together as she stands in front of me, completely out of place in her four-inch heels, pencil skirt, white button-up blouse and suit jacket—as if she’s going to take on the world one Jimmy Choo at a time.

“Beer?” I ask.

Her lips part, her gaze roving over my entire body as I stand in front of her, mini skirt and tight tank top stained with water from dishes and cleaning. At least the morning crew won’t have to work their asses double like I normally do.

“I think I could handle one,” Madeline’s smooth tones wash over me.

“Think? All right, Miss Priss. What’s your poison?”

“Do you have any wheat?”

“My favorite.” I raise an eyebrow at her as I grab a pint and pour. I make myself one as well, and hand hers to her. She stands awkwardly on the other side of the counter as if she’s trying to decide where to stand and what to do, like the industrial style stools are too beneath her. Sipping my beer, I lean over the bar top from the back side and wait her out to see what decision she’ll make.

I don’t offer any help. Finally, Madeline perches on the top of one stool and sips her beer. She raises a thin eyebrow at it before looking up at me. “This is actually good.”

I roll my eyes and straighten my back, chugging half my beer. “It is.”

“I should have visited sooner.”

“You’re a bit out of place, don’t you think?”

Madeline’s lips twitch, and I can’t tell if she’s amused or agreeing with me or a little of both. Probably both. I have a feeling most people don’t talk to her like I do.

“I’m checking in,” she states.

“As you always do.” Pressing my forearms into the counter, I stare at her. “It’s going swimmingly.”

That is definitely an amused smirk.

“Marco is taking on Bryson while I deal with the other two. My job is at least going well on that front.”

“And this one?”

I sigh. “This one sucks balls, and unfortunately, not literally.”

Delight flashes in her eyes before it vanishes. “I suppose that could be a problem for you.
